| The
idea was to score this as if it were a 1930's adventure film -- a la
Erich Korngold/Franz Waxman/Max Steiner -- which would typically have a
lot of underscoring. Musically I was going for an overall romantic,
tonal sound, with jagged elements supporting moments of suspense and
tension. We wanted a large orchestral sound, as these films would have,
so due to obvious budgetary restraints the recording is primarily
synthesized, with the additional use of recordings of authentic Indian
instruments. This CD contains more than 40 cues! Read a plot summary, purchase a playscript, or license the play at: Samuel French, Inc. |

| Music
from a one woman play in which 14th-Century medieval religious mystic
Julian of Norwich relates the story of Heloise and Abelard. Julian
of Norwich was a practical mystic, and the first woman to write in the
English tongue. In this one-hour play with music, she speaks of
hazelnuts and household pots, of searing darkness and of sacred
sensuality. We visit Julian in her anchorage where she counsels and
prods, celebrates and mourns. She finds lessons in everything -- from
the simple beauty of a single leaf, to the heart-stirring story of
Heloise and Abelard. Through her compassionate explorations of both the
mundane and the extraordinary, we come face to face with the pain and
nobility of enfleshment. The play was first presented at Artpark and then Off-Broadway at New Dramatists for The Womankind Festival. It was most recently shown at The Washington Square United Methodist Church and at Marble Collegiate Church. To learn more about the work of Karen DeMauro visit: The Acting Center |
